About

About

MAINMOOD is a mobile jewelry e-commerce app designed to help users discover and gift jewelry through a guided shopping experience. The Challenge

The Challenge

Shopping for accessories especially when searching for a gift often means browsing through endless categories which can quickly become overwhelming for the users due to number of available options a brand can offer. In addition, most jewelry brands primarily rely on web-based shopping experiences, with very few dedicated mobile applications designed specifically for jewelry discovery. Those that are available tend to only show countless products while offering little guidance to support users in making a decision and as a result, users often rely on multiple platforms before completing what should be a simple purchase.

Competitor Analysis

Competitor Analysis

In order to better understand and address the common challenges found across existing platforms, i first decided to complete a deeper analysis of current jewelry retailers and marketplaces including Mejuri, Pandora, Swarovski, and Etsy, through methods such as real world usage, surveys, interviews, and web research.

What We Found

What We Found

Participants expressed that when purchasing jewelry as a gift, they often struggle to translate an idea or intention into an actual product choice. While existing platforms offer large selections, they provide limited support to help users confidently decide what to buy.

Many participants said they usually start by browsing categories like rings or bracelets, which assumes they already know what they want. While this still works, they also found it limiting and expressed a need for guidance when shopping based on occasion, personal style, or gifting.

Marketplace and retail platforms often present too many options, requiring users to constantly filter and compare products. As a result, many users spend excessive time browsing, which makes choosing a final piece more overwhelming.

Information Architecture

Information Architecture

After the goals were more clear, i then started with mapping out the information architecture to help in making our app and overall navigation as simple and flexible as possible. Users can either begin with the guided discovery experience or browse products directly through categories, depending on how they prefer to shop. I believe that this structure would ensure that both guided recommendations and traditional browsing coexist within a clear navigation system, allowing users to move easily from discovery to purchase.

Diving deeper, to now understand how users would move through the app, key user flows were mapped to visualize the journey from discovery to purchase. Mapping the user flow helped me in ensuring a smooth and intuitive path across the shopping experience while minimizing unnecessary steps and ensuring efficiency.

LO-FI Wireframes

LO-FI Wireframes

To explore different layouts and navigation options, I started with low-fidelity wireframes. These wireframes allowed early testing of user flows while ensuring the experience remained clear and easy to navigate.

TAKEAWAYS

Designing MAINMOOD helped me better understand how overwhelming jewelry shopping can feel, especially when users are looking for gifts without knowing exactly what to buy. Throughout this project, i explored how guided experiences can support decision making while still allowing users the freedom to browse and explore on their own. Working on MAINMOOD also strengthened my approach to mobile e-commerce design and interaction thinking. It reinforced the importance of creating experiences that feel simple, supportive, and intuitive, helping users move from discovery to purchase with confidence.
